Southeastern Bulgaria is one of the least-known yet most nature- and history-rich parts of the country. It is home to the Eastern Rhodopes, Sakar, the Dervent Heights and Strandzha – four distinct mountain areas connected by a shared natural and cultural heritage. Thanks to decades of limited human impact along the border, this territory is now part of Europe’s Green Belt and preserves some of the continent’s most valuable habitats.
The region lies along the Via Pontica migration route and is world-renowned for its biodiversity. Iconic species such as the Eastern Imperial Eagle, Egyptian Vulture and Black Stork can be observed here, alongside a rich diversity of wildlife, plants and ancient forests. Beyond its natural wealth, the land preserves thousands of years of history – Thracian sanctuaries, dolmens, fortresses, ancient roads and living local traditions.
Today, Southeastern Bulgaria offers opportunities for sustainable tourism that combine hiking and cycling routes, wildlife watching, kayaking, photography, local cuisine and encounters with the people who continue to preserve the spirit of this unique region.
